The best food-grade BBQ pellets are made from 100% natural hardwood, produce a clean burn and, unlike logs, a consistent smoke flavour.
They come in a variety of woods, which gives you even more scope to develop differentiating flavour profiles for your products as well as a mouth-wateringly appetising colour. Hardwood pellets are clean to handle, easy to load and easy to store, making them so much easier to manage than dirty woodpiles or dusty charcoal. They also leave significantly less ash than wood or charcoal. Disposing of hot coals and embers is no longer an issues Unlike natural gas and propane, hardwood pellets do not produce a drying heat, and are a renewable resource. |

Made from hardwood, BBQ pellets come in two forms: Wood Blends and Single Woods. Ideally, they should not contain additives, binders, or 'secret ingredients' that could either affect the performance of your smoker, or lead to probing questions from your EHO.
We only stock 100% Hardwood BBQ Pellets - No Binders. No Additives.
BBQ Wood Pellet Blends
Blended BBQ pellets are created at source and will be either a mix of high heat value Oak and another flavour wood, such as Hickory, or a combination of different species formulated for a specific flavour profile, e.g. Maple + Beech + Cherry = Sweet Wood Blend
Those cooking with pellet burning smokers typically use wood blends for their high BTU output, but are increasingly adding single woods to the mix to create their house flavour profiles.
Single Wood BBQ Pellets
As the name suggests, these comprise just one species. They are typically used in small quantities in electric smokers, or added by the user to their core wood blend to create distinctive smoke flavour.
With the exception of Oak, single-wood BBQ pellets tend not to burn as hot the blends, may contain bark (which deepens the smoke notes) and will create relatively more ash - but nothing like as much as logs.
It's so much easier to create a unique and distinctive wood smoke flavour profile with BBQ pellets than it is with logs!
Cost-Effective Fuel and Flavour
When bought in bulk, which us what the vast majority of FEC users do, the typical wood pellet cost of running a smoker such as an FEC120 using Cookshack's Hickory Blend is around 50p per hour.
In SM/SmartSmoker electric smokers, the typical user is unlikely to spend more than 20p worth of pellets per wood box, for an entire cook.

Supplied in bags weighing 20lb/9.07kg or 28lbs/12.7kg, hardwood BBQ pellets are easy and clean to store.
For example, a typical one month supply for a FEC120 can be stored in a space measuring 100cm x 120cm x 100cm. A usual three month supply for a SM160 in a space of 55cm x 45cm x 25cm.
However, for safe storage it is essential to follow these two simple rules.

Keep Dry
Do not let hardwood pellets get damp.
Keep Aired
Do not store pellets in an airtight container/space
Do not let hardwood pellets get damp.
- If exposed to excessive moisture they will expand and degrade.
- If used in a pellet smoker, the degraded pellets will warm up as the auger feeds them closer to the firepot, and eventually set like concrete. This may interfere with operation of the smoker.
Keep Aired
Do not store pellets in an airtight container/space
- Without ventilation/natural air movement, there's a risk of condensation building up inside the pellet bags. This would have a detrimental effect on pellet qualit
- Store hardwood BBQ pellet bags in a open or ventilated area. They do not need to be kept in sealed storage as is the case with heating pellets when stored loose by the ton. When heating pellets are stored this way without proper ventilation, there is a risk of oxygen depletion/carbon monoxide build-up within the sealed unit. For more information on storing pellets in sealed spaces please refer to HSE Bulletin OPSTD 3-2012.
How BBQ Pellets are Made
BBQ pellets are produced by compressing natural hardwood which has first passed through a hammer mill to provide a uniform dough-like mass.
This mass is fed to a press, where it is squeezed through a die having holes of the size required, typically 6mmin in diameter.
The high pressure of the press causes the temperature of the wood to increase greatly, and the lignin forms a natural "glue" that holds the pellet together as it cools. The high temperature also destroys pests and other organic contaminents that may be present in the wood.
BBQ pellets are extremely dense and are produced with a low moisture content that allows them to be burned with a very high combustion efficiency.
Their regular geometry and small size allow automatic feeding with very fine calibration when fed to a firepot. Alternatively, small quantities of barbecue pellets can be used as smoke-flavour agents in electric smokers or other, appropriate non-wood-burning cooking equipment.
Their high density also permits compact storage.
